Newsletter 7 of 2009
To all Scouts and Scout Parents,

After a rather hectic first term, we now have a whole new term ahead of us. We have already had a Friday meeting, and although we were few in number (I believe that Private Schools were on holiday), we had a lot of fun – from our activities, we have discovered that if we increase our numbers, we will have more fun! So, start recruiting! This is a collective effort – at present we have 13 Scouts – and I want to increase the numbers to 24 by Chairman’s!

Speaking about Chairman’s, I am sure you have all heard the great news that we have been invited, to the Chairman’s Challenge, which takes place in September. We are going to win – or at least have fun trying to win – impossible is nothing! I am busy trying to get assistance from ex-Scouts, who have attended Chairman’s in the past, who can assist us in our preparations – this is going to be good. More info to follow!

This term and the next are going to be challenging. This term has only one District event - the Cycle Challenge (diarise it - 6th June). Next term has the Strauss Shield camp (24 – 26 July), Junior Scout Hike (5 – 6 September), Chairman’s Challenge (11 – 13 September), and the Senior Scout Hike (24 – 27 September). Phew, sounds exhausting already – please diarise these dates now!

When I mentioned the Challenge (last paragraph), I wasn’t talking about the events – but more the fact that in between the events I have decided that we will push badge work – interest badges and advancement badges – and here is the Challenge – by the end of the third term, each Scout needs at least 1 new interest badge, and to have completed at least one level of advancement! We will achieve this by having an advancement camp (probably end May – date to be confirmed), and we must push to achieve this advancement! We have 13 future Springboks in our group – and it is up to us to make this happen!

I have already started working on the plans for doing our Swimming Badge – which will be done at the Craighall Planet Fitness Club - thanks guys – possibly on 1st May (public holiday) – let me know if you can make this so that I can confirm the booking so that  I can confirm!

Tomorrow night (24 April) we are having a chilled evening at the hall  – with a bonfire and a braai (whilst we are still in National Productivity Month, and everyone is in holiday mode)! As discussed last week bring R10.00 for the boerie and rolls! Bring a friend and we won’t charge them for theirs!

I have not as yet received all contact details for all the Scouts (form sent out in January). Please let me have yours ASAP if you haven’t already! Let me know if you need the form sent again.

We need to increase the parent involvement in Scouting – if you are able to help out at all please let me know. In particular I need help on Friday nights – and you don’t have to go into uniform, just a bit of assistance will free me up to make Scouts even more exciting! If you, or anyone you know, would like to get involved – let me know!

Looking forward to a great term.

Term 1 2009 Scout Newsletter
Happy new year to you – may 2009 be a year of happiness, good health and lots of Scouting!

Jock and I are back in the swing of things and we are ready for an exciting term ahead! Unfortunately Adam Griffiths is tied up for a while with work, but will be back with us towards the end of the term, and Harley Allkins is enjoying his sabbatical – Pip hasn’t arrived yet, but will make his appearance soon!

This term’s program has been drawn up, and will be circulated during next week. It is fun filled, and has a “Pirates of the Carribeanish” spin – all in preparation for our young pirates who are taking on the Muddy waters of KonTiki (weekend 6th – 8th March 2009)!

KonTiki is 49 days away – should we be nervous or excited? Excited of course as the arrangements for KonTiki are being Handled by Stuart Reid and Alistair Fenton. Yippee! Of course, as the Scouters, we will oversee the arrangements, but Alistair and Stuart are undergoing training by organising and co-ordinating Craighall’s involvement in this event – and will emerge wiser, better trained leaders to tackle their next task. If you are nervous – don’t be, keep the nerves for when your son is organising KonTiki!

You will receive various communications in the next weeks (the first of which should be handed out tonight), detailing the arrangements and requirements for KonTiki, and the various training days / work days in the run up. Please respond to these communications, and diarise the events / note the details thereof. As always, we don’t have much time before we tackle the road to Springs for KonTiki, but we will overcome this obstacle. For KonTiki we need your full support – and we are sure that we can count on you! Please remember that you are most welcome to come and spend the weekend with us.

The one item that I must draw your attention to at this stage is the Kontiki fees. We have not as yet set the camp fees for KonTiki, but will let you know details by next Friday. We estimate that they will be in the region of R 250-00 per Scout. We need to collect this money as soon as possible, and obviously find out who will be attending KonTiki. We have therefore agreed that we will offer a 10% Discount to everyone who pays their KonTiki fees on or before Friday 30 January ’09. We will require confirmation and payment for KonTiki by the 20th of February - any person who has not paid by that date will not be able to attend KonTiki. Please let us know as soon as possible!

The only other District event term is BP Sunday – in recognition of the founder of Scouting  Baden Powell. The District event is scheduled for 22nd February, and we will let you have further details soon.

I am in the process of updating the Scout database, and would like to ask you to let me have all your details via e-mail. If I need any further details, I will have your correct e-mail address, and will be able to contact you to obtain the information. As always, I will need contact details for both parents, and the Scouts. Give me as much info as possible!

The  complete and return the Annual Scout consent form as soon as possible. The form can be found here.

Yours in Scouting
