WHAT IS SCOUTING? AN EDUCATION FOR LIFE! It's an 'adventure' through physically challenging activities such as: year-round camping, orienteering, hiking, canoeing, biking, mountaineering, kayaking and much, MUCH more! Let's not forget games and crafts!
Scouting teaches personal and interpersonal skills like: problem-solving, team building, independent thinking, survival techniques, sharing, spiritual strengthening, and recognizes the youth's efforts through an extensive badge recognition program. We develop the youth of today into the leaders of tomorrow while building long-lasting memories and life-long friendships.
Scouting South Africa is one of the largest youth organizations. The program is family based with a focus on teamwork, self-confidence and achievement.
Please see the "About Us" link and "Links" pages for more information on scouting.
WHAT TYPE OF PROGRAM AND ACTIVITIES DO THE YOUNG PEOPLE PARTICIPATE IN? The program is a series of enjoyable activities based upon abilities related to age and group consensus, such as meetings, day trips, craft projects, outdoor skills, weekend and summer camping.
HOW OLD ARE THE CHILDREN? A child starts visiting Cubs when they are seven and a half and then join at eight. They remain a cub till ten and a half when they will start visiting Scouts. A child joins Scouts when they are eleven and hopefully complete there Top Award before eighteen.
HOW OFTEN AND WHERE DO THE GROUPS MEET? Our Cub Pack and Scout Troop have their regular meeting once a week during the normal School Term on a Friday at out Scout Hall. Have a look at the contact page for directions. Cub Meetings run from 17h00 till 19h00 and Scout Meetings run from 19h00 till 21h30 on Fridays. In addition to this we will have voluntary week-end or day events.
WHO ARE THE LEADERS? The leaders are regular people selected by the chartered organization who volunteer their time for the benefit of young people. Often they are the parents of Scouts who are in the unit or local leaders in the community. On many occasions, past scouts from the troop also become leaders.
AS A PARENT WHAT DO I DO? Scouting is a partnership with the parents of the young person. Scouting is an excellent opportunity for you to spend very high quality time with your son. Since the leaders are not paid they would most certainly appreciate any help that you could provide.
WHAT ABOUT UNIFORMS? Uniforms can be purchased at the Scout Shop. Second hand uniforms are available at our hall.
WHAT ABOUT CAMPING? Both Cub (ages 8-10) and Scouts (ages 11-17) have the opportunity to go both weekend and summer camping. We make use of the Scouting owned camp sites in Gauteng, Scouting approved campsites and public venues.
SO HOW MUCH WILL ALL THIS COST? Because the leaders aren't being paid, Scouting as a whole is a very inexpensive, year-round, worthwhile activity. Our fee structures can be found here. Financial sponsorship programmes are also available. HOW DO I BECOME A SPONSOR? As a sponsor you will be asked to fund a cub or scout's membership. This should cover his membership fees, his uniform charges as well as costs for activities. The anonymity of sponsors is respected. Sponsors are also provided with progress reports on their nominated sponsee. WHAT KIND OF BADGES AND AWARDS EXIST? Your son can earn a wide variety of achievements and awards by having fun and learning something in areas such as citizenship, personal fitness, family living, the outdoors, nature, crafts, and more.
WHAT ABOUT THE GIRL SCOUTS? Our Group currently does not accept girls as cubs or scouts. We require additional adults to become uniformed scouters to meet the regulatory requirements that will enable us to accept girls.
